This year marks an incredible milestone for Bowen’s Customs & Logistics—40 years of trusted service, innovation, and resilience. We sat down with Director Peter Gasnier to reflect on Bowen’s journey, its evolution, and what’s in store for the future.

How did Bowen’s get its start?
Bowen’s began back in 1985, when Michael Bowen took the leap to start his own customs brokerage business. What started as a dedicated customs service for import shipments has steadily grown into something much larger.
How has the company evolved over the years?
From those early days of pure brokerage, Bowen’s has expanded into a full suite of logistics services. We didn’t stop there—we’ve also developed trading capabilities, sourcing commodities for supermarkets and retailers. Today, we proudly offer end-to-end logistics and supply chain solutions, including in-house forecasting and supply.
What’s been the biggest milestone or proudest moment so far?
Without a doubt, transitioning from a specialised customs brokerage to a comprehensive 4PL (Fourth-Party Logistics) provider. Building out our supply chain capabilities and offering clients integrated solutions has been a game-changer.
What does reaching 40 years mean to you personally?
I took over leadership of Bowen’s a decade ago. In that time, we’ve navigated multiple restructures and emerged even stronger, especially after the challenges of the COVID era. Hitting 40 years is not just a number—it’s a testament to the resilience and dedication of our team.
How has your leadership style grown over the years?
One key lesson: change before it’s necessary. You need to pivot quickly when markets shift, and our size allows us to stay nimble. Flexibility is one of our greatest strengths.
What’s the biggest challenge Bowen’s has faced—and how did you overcome it?
A major contract ended abruptly, putting pressure on the business. What got us through was our multi-skilled team and the ability to adapt quickly. It reinforced the importance of having a versatile workforce.
How has the industry changed in 40 years?
In one word—digitisation. The rise of technology, automation, and now AI has transformed the logistics landscape. We’ve embraced these changes and the new challenges they bring.
What keeps Bowen’s ahead of the curve?
It comes down to two things: innovation and partnership. We’re constantly seeking ways to improve and stay open-minded, while partnering with key stakeholders who are leaders in their fields.
What role has your team played in Bowen’s success?
Our people are everything. Their skills, dedication, and adaptability have been instrumental to our growth and longevity.
How do you build client relationships that last decades?
We don’t just work for our clients—we partner with them. It’s all about mutual success and fostering strong, collaborative relationships.
What sets Bowen’s apart from competitors?
Our family-oriented thinking has been the foundation from day one. Today, our team continues to build on those values, ensuring we’re always meeting and exceeding client needs.
What excites you most about the future?
We’re actively implementing a dynamic succession plan, preparing the next generation to continue driving the business forward. The future is bright, and we’re ready for it.
Any advice for other business leaders aiming for longevity?
Stay relevant. Understand the market, act quickly, and never be afraid to evolve.
How are you celebrating the big 4-0?
Like logistics teams have done for centuries—a strong meal, a beverage or two, and time to reflect and celebrate with the team.
